About this episode

"People aren't quitting Claude or quitting ChatGPT. They're still quitting humans."

Two weeks out from a product launch, Chris Ronzio, Jonathan Ronzio, and Sasha Robinson record the working session instead of describing it afterward. Sasha is building the launch webinar, Jonathan runs product marketing, and the episode is them figuring it out on the mic.

The transferable half is the launch mechanics. Where your messaging actually comes from, which is customer language captured during R&D rather than a brainstorm at the end. The audience almost everyone forgets — your own team, who will be talking to customers about something they first learned about from a demo. And the full inventory of places you can interrupt someone's attention, which for most businesses extends well past email and social into invoice inserts, signage, truck wraps, and a Google Business Profile nobody has updated.

Jonathan's story about printing out every G2 review, lying on the floor with a highlighter, and rewriting the website in customers' own words is the best argument in the episode for doing research by hand before you automate it. Chris asks the obvious follow-up — why not just feed it all to an LLM? — and the answer is more interesting than either extreme.

The other half is performance management itself: why it comes down to clarity, fairness, and trust, why fairness is the problem most companies never address, and what you can do about any of it with no software at all.

Key Takeaways:

  • Your team is the third audience, and the one that gets skipped. Marketing teams plan for prospects and customers and assume the internal message trickles down. It doesn't. Trainual's own version of this failure was people on live customer calls discovering a feature for the first time because it appeared in a demo. Two things made it worse: growing fast enough that the game of telephone stopped working, and using their own product daily, which created a false sense that everyone knew what had changed. The fix was unglamorous — actual enablement sessions for the whole team before anything ships.
  • Your messaging already exists in your customers' words. The hooks come out of the R&D process, not a positioning workshop at the end. Through discovery calls, surveys, prototype sessions, and beta feedback, you write down the exact phrasing people use to describe the problem. Jonathan's version of this was printing every G2 review, going through them on the floor with a highlighter, finding the repeated phrases, and rewriting the website in that language — which measurably lifted trial conversion. On whether to let AI do that work now: spend the manual time where it matters, and understanding your customer is where it matters.
  • Make a list of every place you can interrupt someone. For a software company that's in-app messages, sales enablement, CX conversations, events, two monthly newsletters split between prospects and customers, organic social, and paid retargeting. For everyone else the list is different and mostly physical — signage, banners, menu boards, flyers at the register, a colored insert in the invoice, lettering on the truck, and the Google Business Profile that hasn't been touched since it was created. The principle is the same either way: you need something that breaks the pattern of what someone expected to see.
  • Performance management is buying you clarity, fairness, and trust. Clarity is individual — does this person know how they're doing, what growth looks like, and what happens if they exceed? Fairness is systemic, and it's the one Chris flags as most severe: the moment you have multiple managers, you have inconsistency in review quality, feedback frequency, and who advocates for raises. Since nothing is more personal to an employee than their pay, a compensation process that feels random makes the whole company feel random. Trust is the compounding one — you say what you'll do, you do it on the stated cadence, and you repeat it until your word is reliable.
  • Four things you can do before buying anything. No surprises: if someone misses badly on a project, tell them directly and soon, without the compliment sandwich and without being harsh enough that they shut down. Make feedback continuous rather than saving it for the review. Don't only look backward — spend as much time on where they're going as on what already happened. And package it, so they leave with something concrete to act on and reference later, rather than a conversation they half-remember.
