Key roofing terms

  • Asphalt
A key material, used in a number of different cases. In roofing, it's often utilized in shingles.

  • Bundle
Unit of measurement for packages of shingles. In other words, one bundle means one "bunch" of a specific number of shingles.

  • Deck
This is often made of plywood, and is the base where roofing materials are applied.

  • Dormer
This is the structure that projects from a sloped roof. It's typically found on top of windows throughout a home.

  • Eave
On a roof that is sloped, this is the lower edge.

Building departments often require a specific threshold. A fire rating denotes how protective materials would be in case of a fire. Ratings consist of "A", "B", or "C" – with "A" being the most fire resistant.
  • Flashing
Metal that prevents water seepage, especially within roofing systems. These can include structures like chimneys or vent pipes.

  • Shingle Course
Row of shingles on a roof, used to refer to specific shingle locations/patterns on a roof.

  • Granules
Often made of ground up molten rock particles, granules make up the top coat on asphalt shingles.

  • Impact Resistance
Whether shingles are more or less likely to become damaged upon impact.

  • Pitch
The Rise/Span of a roof (or how steep a roof actually is). The higher the pitch, the steeper the roof.

  • Ply
How many layers make up a given roof system.
  • Rafters
Supporting framework, where the roof deck is attached.

  • Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS)
Hard rubber that gives a trampoline-like effect to asphalt, to help with impact.
