Roofing - Roof Cleaning Process Template

This process outlines how you should clean roofs before performing any service.

Introduction to the Roof Cleaning Process

Description

This process involves the cleaning of various types of roofs, including composition roofs, wood shake roofs, tile roofs, and metal roofs. We provide step-by-step instructions for cleaning methods specific to each roof type, as well as post-cleaning treatments, and gutter cleaning so that our entire team is aligned on what we do and the standards for our roof cleaning service.

Pre-cleaning Preparations

What we do pre-cleaning

Step 1: Safety Precautions

  1. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, work gloves, and non-slip footwear.
  2. Use fall protection equipment, such as safety harnesses and secure ladders, to prevent accidents or falls from heights.
  3. Follow proper ladder safety protocols and adhere to local safety regulations.

Step 2: Roof Inspection

  1. Inspect the roof for any damage, loose or missing shingles, or other issues that may require repair before cleaning.
  2. Clear the roof of any debris, such as leaves, twigs, or branches.

Step 3: Gather Materials and Tools

Depending on the roof type and cleaning method, gather the necessary materials and tools, including:

  • Cleaning solutions.
  • Brushes.
  • Soft brooms.
  • Pressure washers.
  • Safety harnesses.
  • Gutter cleaning equipment.

Different types of roof cleaning

Composition Roof Cleaning

  1. Clear loose debris from the roof using a soft broom or leaf blower.
  2. Apply a composition roof cleaning solution, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Use a soft-bristle brush or low-pressure power washer to gently scrub the roof, working in small sections.
  4. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for the recommended time before rinsing the roof thoroughly using a garden hose, ensuring all cleaning solution residue is removed.
  5. Inspect the roof for any remaining stains or areas that require additional cleaning. Repeat the cleaning process if necessary.

Wood (Cedar) Shake Roof Cleaning

  1. Remove loose debris from the roof using a soft broom or leaf blower.
  2. Apply our wood shake roof cleaning solution (specifically formulated for wood surfaces) as per the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Apply a wood preservative or sealant to protect the wood and enhance its durability.

Tile Roof Cleaning

  1. Remove loose debris from the roof using a soft broom or leaf blower.
  2. Apply a tile roof cleaning solution, specifically formulated for tile surfaces, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Apply a tile roof sealer or coating to enhance protection and extend the life of the roof.

Metal Roof Cleaning

  1. Remove loose debris from the roof using a soft broom or leaf blower.
  2. Apply a metal roof cleaning solution, specifically formulated for metal surfaces, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Apply a metal roof sealer or coating to provide additional protection against corrosion and weathering.

Post-Cleaning Treatments

Moss and Algae Treatment

Post-Cleaning Inspections:

  1. Inspect the roof for any damaged or loose shingles, tiles, or metal panels.
  2. Replace or repair any damaged roofing components as necessary.

Moss and Algae Treatment:

  1. If moss or algae growth is present on the roof, apply a moss and algae treatment solution, specifically formulated for roofs.
  2. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application, ensuring full coverage of affected areas.
  3. Allow the treatment solution to penetrate and work according to the recommended timeframe.
  4. Gently brush or rinse off the treated moss or algae, taking care not to damage the roof surface.
  5. Repeat the treatment process if necessary.

Gutter Cleaning

  1. Position the ladder securely near the gutter section you plan to clean first.
  2. Use a gutter scoop or trowel to remove debris from the gutters. Start at one end and work towards the downspout.
  3. Place the scooped debris into a bucket or onto a tarp for easy disposal later.
  4. Rinse the gutters. Once the debris is removed, use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to rinse the gutters thoroughly. Start from the opposite end of the downspout and work your way towards it. Pay attention to the water flow and check for any clogs or obstructions. Use the water pressure to dislodge any remaining debris.
  5. Clean the downspouts. If the downspouts are clogged, use a plumber's snake or a straightened wire hanger to clear the blockage. Flush the downspouts with water to ensure proper water flow and remove any remaining debris.
  6. Inspect the gutters for any damage, such as cracks or loose sections. Repair or replace damaged components as needed. Check the gutter fasteners and ensure they are securely attached to the fascia.

Cleanup and Disposal

  1. Clean up any debris, cleaning equipment, and materials used during the cleaning process.
  2. Dispose of waste materials and cleaning solutions according to local regulations.
