Roofing - Asphalt Roof Shingle Installation Process Template

Use this process template to set up a procedure for installing asphalt roof shingles.

Introduction

What this process covers

Asphalt shingle installation is an essential skill for the members of our team. In this process, we’ll cover ordering materials, installation and necessary safety measures to keep everyone safe and sound while working on the roof.

Having a standardized installation process is our secret sauce to ensuring that all roofing projects are top-notch and safe. When we get it right, we keep our clients happy and their homes leak-free and looking sharp.

By the end of this training, you can be confident that you’ll be able to tackle any asphalt shingle installation!

Ordering Materials

Step 1: Roof Measurement and Calculation

Measure the roof area to determine the required quantity of materials. Calculate the total square footage by multiplying the length and width of each roof section and summing up the results. Add a waste factor of 10% to account for cuts and overlaps.

Step 2: Selecting Shingle Type and Color

Choose the appropriate asphalt shingle type based on the project requirements and regional climate conditions. Consider factors such as durability, warranty, fire rating, and aesthetics. Select the desired shingle color that complements the overall building design or refer to the customer’s request.

Step 3: Placing Material Order

Contact our suppliers to place an order for the required materials. Provide accurate measurements, shingle type, and color specifications. Confirm delivery dates and ensure all necessary accessories, such as underlayment, starter strips, ridge vents, nails, and sealant, are included in the order.

Have the delivery sent to the customer’s address to minimize costs and the risk of shingles breaking during transport.

How to Install Asphalt Roof Shingles

Step 1: Safety Precautions

Before beginning the installation, ensure the following safety precautions are in place:

  1. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, work gloves, and non-slip footwear.
  2. Implement proper fall protection measures — we always use safety harnesses and secure ladders before use.
  3. Consider the weather. Avoid installing shingles during inclement weather conditions, high winds, or freezing temperatures. If the weather is too rough, reschedule the roof installation with the customer.

Step 2: Roof Preparation

Prepare the roof for shingle installation by following these steps:

  1. If applicable, remove existing roofing materials, ensuring the deck is clean, dry, and free from debris.
  2. Inspect the roof deck for any damaged or rotted sections. Repair or replace them as necessary to ensure a solid foundation for the shingles.
  3. Lay a layer of appropriate underlayment (we use asphalt-saturated felt) over the entire roof surface, starting from the eaves and overlapping each subsequent row.

Step 3: Shingle Installation

Follow these steps to install asphalt roof shingles:

  1. Attach starter strips along the eaves of the roof, ensuring they are properly aligned and securely fastened.
  2. Lay the first row of shingles. Start at the bottom edge of the roof, align the first shingle with the starter strip, and secure it with roofing nails. Ensure proper alignment and overhang as specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Continue installing subsequent rows of shingles, staggering the joints and ensuring proper alignment. Nail each shingle according to the manufacturer's guidelines, typically placing nails above the adhesive strip.
  4. Cut shingles to fit around vents, chimneys, and other roof penetrations using appropriate tools. Ensure a proper fit and secure them in place.
  5. Install ridge vents along the ridges and hip/ridge shingles to provide ventilation and create a finished look. Follow manufacturer instructions for proper installation.
  6. Apply roofing sealant to exposed nail heads, flashing, and any other areas prone to water penetration, as specified by the manufacturer.

Step 4: Quality Control and Cleanup

Ensure the quality of the installation and complete the process by following these steps:

  1. Conduct a thorough visual inspection of the installed shingles to ensure proper alignment, secure fastening, and overall quality of workmanship.
  2. Remove any debris, discarded materials, and equipment from the work area. Dispose of waste material appropriately.
  3. Involve the project supervisor to inspect the completed installation. Obtain their sign-off to confirm satisfaction with the work.
